While most villages have traditional Chamorro names, Santa Rita is named after one of its patron saints, St Rita of Cascua. Santa Rita was established by Chamorros who were relocated from their original village of Sumay (rebuilt as the Naval Station) which was destroyed in the battle to recapture the island and abandoned during World War II. Santa Rita is located on the southwest coast of Guam and many areas offer a spectacular view of Apra Harbor. The village flower was recently changed to ginger since it is so prevalent throughout many areas of the village.
Santa Rita is still a quaint and quiet village–surrounded by many natural water sources—such as the village of Yona with its boundary in the area of Tarzan Falls; and borders Piti along the Guatali River; by Talofofo in the vicinity of Fena Lake; and, shares a border with Agat along the Namo River. Santa Rita village includes the DOD Captain William C. McCool Elementary/Middle School for the dependents of active-duty U.S. military personnel, Southern High School and the Harry S. Truman Elementary School.
