Cruising through Piti on Marine Corps Drive with just a cursory glimpse, you can easily overlook the plethora of hidden treasures and the historic and commercial significance of this understated village located on Guam’s western shore.
Many folks traversing the seemingly innocuous stretch of roadway – this snippet of Route 1 that dissects the most heavily travelled part of the village with its smattering of homes, mom and pop stores, karaoke bars, restaurants, lounges and a few small businesses, the Veteran’s Cemetery and a couple snapshots worth of beach that connects Naval Station (best known to locals and military folk alike as Big Navy) and Hagatna by way of the tiny quaint village of Asan – don’t realize that there is more…much, MUCH more to Piti than meets the eye; it is literally teaming with all sorts of activity, and with a history that is intriguing, to say the least!
The village, approximately two miles long in length and width, is thought to have derived its name from the Chamorro word “pute,” or possibly even “pinite” which means sore, ache or physical, physiological and, or emotional hurt or pain, which probably stems from the suffering and hardships the indigenous Chamorros endured and, or were subjected to in that particular area.
Piti is host to Cabras Island, site of Guam’s primary power plants, the Port Authority of Guam’s Commercial Port and the Fish Eye Marine Park.
