Inarajan … making my home in you…
There is something to be said about a village that so profoundly affects or resonates with someone, they feel compelled to put pen to paper and write about it.
The group Kalapana took it one step further in the 70’s, composing a song after spending just a few hours traversing the village, seduced and captivated by its serene beauty, intriguing tales of trysts and tragedies, battles waged, love won and lost…and traditions that remain steadfast despite the passage of time and, to some extent, the onslaught of change…
Inarajan (Chamorro: Inalåhan) is a village located on the Southeastern coast of the beautiful island of Guam.
Inarajan is divided into different sections, including areas known as Lada (near Bear Rock), Belen, Peca, Chagamin Lago, Se’se’ (going uphill to Inarajan Middle School), and Tinaga. One of the biggest sections, Malojloj, originally a farming area which people sometimes erroneously consider a “separate” village since it has its own Catholic church, sits uphill and is north of the village proper. Part of the municipality of Inarajan, Malojloj is a wonderful entry point into the heart of southern Guam, with its winding throughway flanked by a verdant and abundant canopy of flora and vegetation.
The history & essence of this alluring village, nestled between Mount Sasalaguan and the Talofofo cliffline, bests reflects the imprint of the Spanish stronghold on Guam spanning more than four centuries and much pride in the Chamorro culture and its time-honored traditions and practices…
The village history predates the 1521 discovery of Guam by the Spanish and was home to the legendary Chief Gadao. Inarajan was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 as an historic district, and is also designated as a folk arts village by way of , the Gef Pa’go Chamorro Village, which receives federal funds for the preservation of local arts and culture. Structures within Gef Pa’go are made of all natural materials to mimic the ancient Chamorro buildings of the past.
Other sites to visit include Historic Inalahan, where some of the old homes and buildings undergoing restoration, are adorned with murals by locally renowned artist, Judy Flores, that capture moments from long ago, when just about all the village’s activities revolved around the village’s pre-World War II church, fishing, farming and, of course, celebrating family and friends…
Additional areas of interest include the statue of Chief Gadao, the Gef Pa’go Chamorro Village, the ancient Paintings of Chief Gadao’s Cave, and historic village architecture.
South of the main village, the road meanders past natural swimming holes known as the Salaglula Pools, and the village’s small seaside Tipogo Cemetery and practically kisses the ocean at Agfayan Bay, where visitors can see the famous Bear Rock, which from certain angles resembles a bear. The newly-constructed boat ramp near Agfayan Bridge is an ideal spot to pull over and take snapshots (mental, digital or on film) of Bear Rock with its gorgeous backdrop of the ocean and sky. Further south is the Inarajan Garden House (a resort reserved exclusively for employees of a Japanese corporation) and privately-owned family beaches.
Whether you’re a visitor en route to a backyard barbeque or the village fiesta, just cruising through as you explore the splendor that is southern Guam, OR someone who calls this picturesque, near-idyllic village HOME, allow yourself the luxury – from time to time – to be seduced by the aesthetic appeal of its natural allure, pure and simple.
Become infused with and savor during your day-lit excursions, the plethora of authentic sight and sounds… Let each experience be your balm for mind, body and spirit…
Indulge… in the lush foliage, the abundance of fruit trees and acres upon acres of sword grass dancing with the gusting of trade winds… in majestic waves continually cresting… crashing and then caressing the man-made rock wall barrier that cradles sections of Route 4, so close you can almost feel or at least see the refreshing spray of sea… where, on some cloudless days, you can barely discern demarcation between the azure depths of ocean and sky…
Become mesmerized…
And…when you have a moment… take a listen to Kalapana’s tribute to this lovely stretch of land, sea and sky…
“We love you Inarajan. You’re ALWAYS on our minds…”
Once you hear it, don’t be surprised if you suddenly…out of the blue… one day… catch yourself humming, whistling or even singing its catchy chorus line –
“Inarajan, (I’m) Making My Home In You…”
Who knows; you just might one day…
